Important native business is'the reason why Major Kemp and four or five followers are now in Carlyle. The party started from Wanganui on Tuesday, in a four-in-hand, reached Waitotara same afternoon, got very glorious, and stopped all night. Commenced the journey next day, reached Waverley—same programme gone through. Started for Carlyle following day, reaching destination in afternoon—same programme. Friday morning, at Carlyle—same programme. And so the programme will be repeated from day to day, at Government expense. What this trip will cost is a question that will never come to light, but it is a crying shame, when business of importance requires transacting at Parihaka or elsewhere, that Government do not send those who can undertake the work in a proper manner. What-Major Kemp and his followers have been deputed by Government to transact, .Wo.nra.flha loss tn knmir.i blit that the party are authorised ,tp.pay this district a visit, we have not a'doubt. It is the height of folly attempting to come to terms with the madman, Te Whiti; and if Government had any sense they would have found this out long ago.
