(From a Correspondent.) A public meeting was held on Saturday, to organise a Local Defence, Force to be used for protecting the district only. A number of leading settlers attended. Captain Kells in the chair. A resolution moved by Captain Jordon, was carried, to effect That the unarmed state of the district should be brought under the notice of the Government, with a request for arms. The -Chairman explained result of conference with Major

Noake, on tile previous evening, as to what would be required of a Local Volunteer Corps. It was resolved That such a corps be formed, and- a considerable number put down their names in the room. Owing to the meeting having been called for 5 p'tn.. and the short notice which could be given, not a large number attended. 9ih Juno, 1872.
