WAVERLEY.

(Prom our own Correspondent.) The following memorial was drawn up at the meeting held on Thursday last, and has been forwarded to Government : To the Honorable the Defence Minister, The respectful memorial of the undersigned inhabitants of Waverley and the neighborhood, Hheweth-—That information has been received by your memorialists that Kereopa, a native of bad character, has threatened to follow the example of Hiroki, by murdering white men ; that Kereopa is at present in or near Waitotara, at a distance of about seven miles from Waverley ; that Major Brown requested that the settlers might be informed of Kereopa’s threat, and put on their guard ; that a public meeting has been called together at Waverley, in consequence of Major Brown’s warning, and being numerously and respectably attended, has resolved unanimously that the Government be memorialised, urging it to take steps to issue arms to the settlers, and to maintain the peace of the district; and the meeting resolved that the settlers of the district are ready to enroll themselves as volunteers ; that an opinion has been given that there might be technical reasons why Kereopa, being an aboriginal native, sl’ould not be arrested on account of his threats ; your memorialists beg to suggest that no mere technical difficulty ought to prevent the Government from taking a step which seems absolutely necessary for public sifety, and to allay the reasonable apprehensions of the inhabitants of the district, and they beg to express their conviction that the sense of the country would support the Government in such a course, and indemnify it for the consequences of any technical irregnlarit}’, if such there be, in the course suggested. Your memorialists beg, in conclusion, to impress upon the Government the desirability of losing no time in organising and arming volunteer forces on this coast, owing to the threatening aspect of events which have recently transpired in the neighbourhood of New Plymouth.
