CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.

THE usual monthly meeting o£ the above Board was held on Monday. Present— Messrs Milroy (chairman), Dale, Aitchison, Adams, Taplin, Hirst, and Williams. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. After the reading of the minutes Mr. Hirst asked to be allowed to bring forward the subject of a permanent survey of the town, but nothing was done iri the matter. Permission was granted Mr. oherwood to snb-lease sections 11 and 12, Block 40, to John Louis and James Macaulay. Mr. W. Williams applied for permission to transfer Hospital Reserve to Patea County Council. Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Taplin, “That a lease of the Hospital Reserve (now in the occupation of Mr W. Williams) be granted to the Patea County Council for a term of twenty-one years, at a rental of Is per annum' and that the lease to Mr. Williams be terminated at his request.” An amendment \Vas proposed by Mr. Taplin, seconded by M.r Adams, and carried on division, that the following words be added to the resolution —“ That the County Council keep the Hospital building

insured for two-thirds of Us value, and that the policy be taken out in the name ol the Carlyle Town Board. Ayes—Adams, Taplin, Hirst, Milroy. Noes—Aitchison, Dale, Williams. The words were added, and the resolution carried as ampnded.

Proposed by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Adams, “ That the Board take steps to have Stafford street improved as far as Section No 11, Block 8.” An amendment was tabled by Mr Aitchison, seconded by MiHirst, “ That before any work bo undertaken in improving. Stafford street, the Works Committee, when elected, inspect the street complained of, and report at the next meeting of the Board the amount of improvements proposed, with costs of same.” On being put, the amendment was lost, on division. Ayes—-Adams, Aitchison, Hirst, Noes—Taplin, Dale, Williams, Milroy. A second amendment, proposed by Mr Aitcheson, seconded by Mr Hirst, was lost, “That the application of Mr Willirms to have Stafford street improved, be considered when the estimates of works for the ensuing year is made.”

Mr Tregear having interviewed the Board with reference to formation of Lincoln afreet, it was proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Williams, and lost on division, “That thefiotpath be formed the full width in Lincoln street on the south side, and gravelled six feet wide, under the supervision of the Working Committee.” Ayes Taplin, Williams, Dale. Noes —Adams, Aitchison, Hirst, Milroy. Proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Williams, “That Mr Milroy and the Board’s Engineer, be authorised to carry out resolution No 3, viz—in employing day labor to improve Stafford street, the work to be commenced forthwith.” An amendment was proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Milroy, “That the new Working Committee, when appointed, be empowered to carry out resolution No. 3.” The amendment was carried.

Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Adams, and carried “ That a' special meeting of the Board be held on Monday, the 9th June, at 7 p.m. Business —To elect Chairman and Works Committee for the ensuing year.” Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Taplin, and carried “ That tenders be called for supplying gravel for street and foot-path repairs, at per load of one cubic yard, for one year, the same to be considered at special meeting on Monday, the 9th instant.”

Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Williams, and carried, “ That the Engineer’s per ccntage on contracts just completed and taken over, be paid by the Chairman.”

Works Committee reported that the following works had been executed during the month by da}' labor ;—.Sand cutting in Norfolk street, levelling in York street, opposite upper wharf, and filling in Kent street, at junction with Bedford street, near Masonic Hotel—at a total cost of £2l 9s ; also levelling sand filling and clearing out water tabic on Taranaki Road, near the cricket ground— at a cost of £2. One man had been employed for fourteen days making general repairs and alterations to streets, water tables, and culverts, at a cost of £5 12s. Tbs contract entered into bj r J. Mouri and Co, in Taranaki Road, bad been completed and taken over ; that in Bedford street would be completed during - the wee. klvirbing foot-path on east side of Taranaki Road was progressing in a satisfactory manner. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that thirteen head of cattle had been impounded from off the public streets during month.

Accounls were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
