PATEA HARBOR.
The following letter from Sir John Coodc has been kindly handed to us for publication ; “ 5 Westminster Chambers, “ London* S.W.* 6th April, 1879. “ Dear Sir,—l am obliged by your letter of 27th January, which reached me on 18th ultimo. The plans and papers relating to Patea only came to hand on 11th February. I bad then oil hatids mj' reports on New Plymouth, Melbourne, and two other Victorian harbours* and was unable to take up Patea until they were dispatched by the last Suez mail. My report on Patea shall be sent off as soon as practicable, consistent with the time necessary to study the question thoroughly. G-ood progress is being made. The scour you refer to at the end of your pier is alrno'st inevitable with a work constructed with an end tip, and without a stage. I think yom proposal to tip in advance of your main work by means of a barge will be found very beneficial as a check bn this scouring. 1 have a somewhat similar cfise elsewhere, in which 1 desired sometime since that the same course should be pursued. Please remember me kindly to Mr Sherwood, Mr Goode joins me in kind regards.—Yodrs faithfully, “John Goode. “ John Thomson, Esq., “ Harbor Engineer, Patea, New Zealand.”
