R.M. COURT—Monday, May 5. (Before G. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.)
Con stab jots Davif.s, of the A.O. Force, Opunake, was charged on the information of Captain Morrison, with absenting himself from Roll call, on the 29th ult., and being brought to the barracks drunk. Mr Parrington appeared for the defendant, and took a preliminary objection, contending that the charge not being of an aggravated character, or against the public, it should have been brought before a board of officers, as directed by the regulations, and not before this Court. —The Resident Magistrate, however, overruled the objection, deciding that he had sufficient power under “ The Armed Constabulary Act, 1867.” The case then proceeded, and Captain Morrison, on cross-examination, being unable to state under what regulation the charge was laid, the case fell through, and was ultimately, after a good deal of discussion, withdrawn. Upon application of Mr Barleyman, - the license of the Old Ketemarae Hotel was temporarily transferred from Patrick Hickie to Joseph Wilson. Hawera Town Board v D. Mr Cameron, in repudiating the report of the natives ordering him off, has put it down to my fertile imagination. Mr Cameron is aware that when he spoke to me about it, that I told him where I got the information ; lie also says ho did not know anything about it until he saw it in the paper. Mr Cameron should adhere to the truth, as ho told me that the first he hoard of it was when a certain gentleman connected with native matters here, went to him to enquire into it I was not aware then that it was contradicted.
The nsnal monthly meeting of the Hawera Town Board was held on Monday last. Present Messrs Winks (chairman), McL’Dowie, King, Duffill, Bamford, Cockburn, and Orowhurst.
The tenders for formation of streets were opened, the following being accepted Victoria and Princes-streets, «L Henley; Regent-street, P. Dowdall. A letter was read from Mr White, the Secretary of the Cricket Club, asking for an extension of one chain round the inside of the cricket ground, for the purpose of planting shrubs, &c.—Application granted.
