WAITOTARA.
(From a Correspondent.) April 24. A FATAL accident occurred this morning on the railway works, some two miles from tin's township. It appears that a party of men were engaged filling trucks fiom a cutting, when a fall of earth took place, striking two of the workmen—one named George Jacikson, who was shovelling into the tracks, was struck by the heavy mass, thrown down, and partly buried, never moving or speaking A fellow laborer, who was working him at the time, thinks that Jackson must have been thrown on the rails on which the tracks run. Another man named Michael Taylor was picking out under the mass which fell, but, strangetosay, escaped with his; life, though seriously injured about the lower part of his body. These were the only men hurt. Jackson was sixty-five year of age, and had been over thirty years in the colony, mostly in Canterbury and West Coast. He had only started work here cm Monday last. Immediately after the accident, the contractors (Messrs Collie, Scott, and Wilkinson), telegraphed to Wanganui for medical assistance, which was promptly responded to by Dr Earle, and Taylor was removed to tho Wanganui hospital at once.
