The Patea Mail. (Published Wednesday and Saturdays.) WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 1879.

Mr W. Geigers, of the Australasian Hotel, has made great improvements to his building. It will be recollected the billiardroom was only one story high, and another story has just been added*to this, which gives the edifice quite a different appearance. It was far from an inferior building before, but the recent addition has filled up a blank, and made everything uniform. More sleeping accommodation will now be available.

It will bo seen by advertisedent in another column, that Mrs Orchard will open her young ladies school this day, at 10 a.m.

Tenders for the erection of two cottages (labor only), will bo received by Mr W. Aitchesou up to 5 p.m. on Saturday next.

An emergency meeting of the Patea Kilwinning Lodge will be held in the Town Hall, on Friday evening next. In another column appears a notification from Mr George Moir, blacksmith, long known in connection with Ihe Campbelltown Forge, Wanganui. It will be seen that lie succeeds Mr Felix Hunger, having extended Ids business ramifications in 1 lie direction of the flourishing j’ouug township of Normanby. We would also direct attention to an announcement from Messrs W. and H, Watts, cabinet makers and upholsterers, Havvera, who would return thanks for support accorded them in the J i, 1 _-.1l lu Ll.o they, have removed to new premises in High Street. The adjourned meeting of the Waverley Town Hall Company will be held in the Town Hall, on Friday evening next. The offices of the Carlyle Town Board have been removed to the rooms at the back of Mr Cowern’s auction mart, where meetings, &c., will be held till further notice.

At a meeting of the Carlyle School Committee on Monday evening last, it was agreed to vote for R. Horner (Patea), Snelson (Palmerston North), and T. Kells (Waitotara), to fill the vacancies in the Education Board caused by tiie resignation of Messrs Jones, Uuthie, and Dalrymple. The election will take place on the 30th April.

On Monday next, sections in the Wairoa survey district, will be to open purchase on application, in the Court House, Carlyle. Part of the land will be sold on the deferred payment system, and the remainder for cash.

A letter signed “ Observer” has been received by us, but the writer having omitted to send his own name, we cannot publish it. Tenders will be received by Mr J. Lett, up to noon on Friday nest, for the erection of a cottage for Mr Stroud.

Mr W. Cowern will sell at his warehouse this day—wheat, flour, iron, river posts, &c. Tenders will be received by Mr Illston, at Manutahi, up to Friday next, for felling 100 acres bush at Whakainara.

Carpenters are in great demand in the district at the present time, there not being suflicient to take up the works required to be done. Good wages should induce men from other parts of the colony to come this way, and we think it would not be amiss if master carpenters endeavored to secure more labor, in order to facilitate their works. Numerous tenders for house buildings are just out, and some provision should be made to have them erected before the bad weather sets in.

A correspondent signing himself “ Addle,” has been writing to the Wanganui Chronicle , condemning the Tournament held at Waverley on Easter Monday. He expected to see some horsemanship, and ho did see it, too, with a vengeance—but not of the pleasantest kind to look upon. This individual must have gone to the Tournament for the express purpose of taking away a bad impression of it, as he unquestionably stands alone in his opinion. Such sports as these should be encouraged, and not written down, because the first attempt does not come exactly up to the standard of corps who have been used to the exercise all then lives. The people of Waverley deserve the highest praise for introducing into the County such manly sports as those of Easter Monday, and we hope the next gathering will be better appreciated by such as “Addle.” A writer from Waverley, in answer to the condemnatory letter, says “ Addle ” should have added “ Head ” to his signature, with which suggestion we quite agree.

Mr Haywood, of the Albion Hotel, seems to have plenty of faith in the futuie of Carlyle. Not many weeks ago tenders were invited for additions to his hotel, and even now he is not satisfied. A notice elsewhere states that more accommodation is needed, tenders for erection of which will be received up to Tuesday next. Ad vance Patea.

Yesterday’s Wanganui Chronicle , referring to a paragraph that appeared in our iacJt issue, with reference to a man admitted into the Wanganui Hospital From this County, says : —“ For our contemporary's information, we may state that the man’s name is Peter Olson, and that when at home he resides at Waverley, which we suppose we are right in considering in the Patea district. We could supply also the name of the medical gentleman who set Mrs Olson’s leg, but our contemporary will doubtless agree with ns that this is unnecessary.” We are now aware that the patient referred to resides at Waverley when ho is at home, but the medical gentlemen of this town distinctly deny having attended him. This much Dr Percy admits. When he was at Waverley some time ago, a man with a very bad arm came to him, and wished the doctor to undertake its cure. Dr Percy refused to take the case, as he would be compelled to see the man twice a day to dress the wounded limb, and suggested that he at once apply for admission to the Patea Hospital. This, however, was not done, and nothing further was heard of the man till tire paragraph appeared in the Chronicle some weeks after. Olson, in fact, neglected himself, for his arm was in a very bad state when advised by Dr Percy to go to Hospital. We have made enquiries, but cannot learn the name of the medical gentleman who attended Mrs Olson. It will be remembered that at the last sitting of the District Court, Judge Kenny' fined a juryman £5 for being absent on the plea of illness, without the certificate af a medical practitioner. In the case against Mr Tapi in at Hawera on Monday, the Court adjourned the hearing through the absence of one of the plain tilt’s (Hawnra) on the plea of illness, and the only proof brought forward was the word of a Maori, who had heard it from another. Why this thusness ? The carcass of a monster bullock was on view at the Carlyle Meat Bazaar on Saturday morning last. The beast weighed 15301bs after being dressed, and is considered the largest one ever killed in the district. The bullock was from the run of Air E. M. Honey/ield, Whenuakura.
