CABLE MESSAGES.
[Reuter's Telegrams.] LONDON, March 25. After a long debate on the Zulu question a vote of want of confidence in the Government was passed by 156 against 61. In the House of Lords, the Premier made a statement concerning the British Policy in Africa. He advocated confederation,' not annexation, and said Sir Bar|jte' Frere was the right man in the right plaice.. He had only been blamed by Government because he had asserted the supreme power of making a declaration of war. The Queen' started for Italy yesterday. Matters are now quiet at Mandeley. The King is willing to make any concession since the despatch of British troops. Colonel Tyler,- with a’ trifling loss, successfully attacked 300 Shinwaris, and inflicted a loss of 200. Wool sales closed to-day ; 230,000 bales sold during series ; 30,000 held over for next sales. ST. PETERSBURG. : ‘ March 25. An unsuccessful attempt has been made to assassinate chief of Gendarmes here.The would-be assassin has escaped. SYDNEY. : March 28. Large Expedition started from here for New Guinea, under the auspices of Baron Macleay.
