HAWERA.

(from OUR OWN ,CORRESPONDENT.) The Town has been - remarkably quiet during the past week, the Maoris having mostly left for Parihaka a drunken squabble has not even happened to enliven us. New buildings are being pushed on as rapidly as timber can be obtained, and several town properties have changed hands during the past, week, at large prices, thus showing that confidence in the future prosperity of thisTownshipisstill unabated. Mr Lloyd has found it necessary to add further additions to his hotel, to meet the increasing demand, and lias purchased adjoining sections to enable him to do so. The Town Hall Company have decided to erect a gajlery.(tbe want of which was felt at the late performances* of the Hart Troupe), and to line and paper the offices used for Court purposes, as soon as timber can be obtained.

It is to be hoped that something will be done to drain the road leading past the Wesleyan Church before winter sets in, or we shall again have it as last year, utterly impassable. If a footpath, only: was formed, which would not entail much .ex>; pense, it would prove a great boon to foot-* passengers, who would hot then be compelled to exhibit their agility by a'.'series., of frantic leaps and sensation water jumps, with various fantastic ' and ingenious rnansauvres, in order to reach their destinations without being saturated above their knees.

Our medical requirements are well looked after, and the want of a doctor is not now felt, there being j/bore to supply our wants than formerly; ; I have received* numerous complaints from Normanby residents,: of horses being stolen off their tethers by night, the ropes as a rule, being cut.lt is supposed to bo the work of Maoris, who can al ways restore the missing animal,‘ “when promised the requisite amount of utu. Coilld one be caught, in the act,. and a salutary lesson dealt himj it might enable them to distinguish the difference meum and team. •*

Ini my report, of.last week-’a Court pro-; ceedihgs, I. omitted to state’that~ in the ’ case of Tiustee of-J-. S. Greig’s estate y T. Espagner in: which’.-, jndgflient.. was given for plaintiff, that’Mr Barleyman appeared on behalf of. plaintiff ; and also in another case which was-adjourned. - \ . An erratum also occuned in the case of J. Carey v Pliiljipa Clemoe, which was inadvertently spelt Cliihie, thus leading to a slight misunderstnding. - [The above, as well as several other* Hawera letters, reached ns* on Wednesday last instead of Tuesday .—Ed. Mail.]
