NOTES ON CRICKET.
I much iegret that I was prevented being present at the last matches • that, were played on the Hawera ground, but I could not possibly be there. In reading the very full report of the matches that appeared in your issue o£ the 19th, I observe that the state of the ground is briefly'commented on ; but on speaking with several cricketers, I hear very general dissatisf ac : t tion expressed. The bowling of such men as F. Bayly, Sarten, &c., js almost- thrown away when the ground is as represented to me. It is much to be regretted that the force pump is not in working order, so that the ground could be put in better condition. As so much lias been said, and something written on the subject, I will say no more, but hope fpr the future. I*believe thatlnglewood will send down a 1 good team 4 on' Wednesday, and if the roller has been well used, that and the recent rain together may create a change for the better. As I said in a former letter, too much attention cannot be given to the ground, as the best player who es’ci’'
handled a bat can never be said to' play on his merits when it is bad and carelessly kept. ROUND ARM. Nonnanby, Feb'. 22.. •
