A public meeting will be held in the Town Hall, Waverley, on Saturday evening, at 8 o’clock, to discuss the toll-gate question, and other matters connected with the County.

Tenders for the purchase of legs of mutton will be received by tho Patea Boiling Down Company up to this evening.

The Wanganui Chronicle says : —“ After the toll-gate question had been discussed at the meeting at Waitotara on Friday night, the question of the desirability or otherwise of merging the Hoad Boards with the County was freely discussed, when-.it was unanimously agreed that to do so under the present Council would have the effect of throwing the district behind for years to come.” Rather a strange admission for ratepayers to make, considering that they assisted to put the present Council into office. Wo shall possibly’ have something further to- say on this matter, when the question is decided at the next meeting of the Council. A special meeting of the Carlyle Town Board was held on Monday evening last. Present —Messrs Milroy (chairman), Taplin, Adams, Dale, Aitcheson and Williams. There was only one tender sent in for street and foot-path formation in Leicester, Dorset, Cambridge, and Oxford streets, viz., Mr D. Hughes, at £5 15s 3d per chain, which was accepted—the total amount being £l2l Os 3d. The Clerk was instructed to defend any objections to the Valuation List.

A telegram received by the County Council, from Cliristchurh, states that Jordan, who some time ago was sent therefor treatment for blindness, is now fit to be discharged. Mr and Mrs Harts’ Operetta Company announce performances in Carlyle Town Hall, this (Wednesday) evening, and on Thursday and Friday. The Company is highly spoken of by the colonial Press, as also by those wiio have had the pleasure of witnessing their performances, and being one of the busiest times Carlyle experiences—viz, Race Week—we should think they would be well patronised. The Company will perform at Hawera on Saturday and Monday next, in the Town Hall.

On Saturday nest Mr W. Dale holds a large land sale in Ihe Hawera Town Hall. Among the properties to he offered, is a valuable 50 acre farm, near the township of Hawera, rural land near Stratford, some valuable sections in the rising townships of Hawera and Normanby, and 25 sections in Stratford Extension, which have been selling freely lately. At Wellington on the 15th instant, Mr Sidey continued the sale of sections set aside for the Wellington public, satisfactory prices being given for a number sold.

On Friday last, applications were received by the Land Officer, Wellington, and the District Land Officer, Carlyle, for rural land in the Wairoa District, on deferred payment. The following is the result: —Block VIII : Section 2, four applicants ; section 4, one ; section 8, four ; section 12, two. Block IX : Section 2, one applicant ; section 5, six ; section 6 two ; section 7, none; section 12, two ; section 17, live-; section 18, two; section 21, three ; section 22, two ; section 24, two. A sale by public auction will be held on the 23th instant, when ail sections for wbrnh more than one person has applied for, will be put up. At the first meeting of the newly-elected New Plymouth Harbor Board, held on Saturday last, Major Atkinson was elected Chairman, and Mr B. Wells, Treasurer. On the motion of Mr Standish, Mr Irvine was re-appointed Engineer. A German named Paul, who received a fractured skull some time ago whilst fighting with a countryman called Karl Gungall, died at Normanby on Monday from injuries received. Captain Wray proceeded there yesterday to hold an inquest. Tho s.s. Clyde arrived from Wanganui yesterday,* with a full general cargo. Captain Bonner reports the bar in splendid condition, there being 7 feet of water at neap tides. The Clyde left again for Wanganui last night,, and will probably return this evening. On Saturday last, at Waitotara, an unfortunate accident happened to a racehorse. Mr Belcher was riding Haphazard a steady gallop, in company with a stable companion, when his horse staggered and fell, coming to the ground,heavily. Mr Belcher recovered himself as speedily as possible, and tried to get the horse up, but failed, the poor beast being unable to move its bind quarters. ‘ Seeing this, he went away a short distance to get assistance, but'on his return found the horse dead. Haphazard was among the acceptors for the ; Paten Handicap, and we are given to understand was backed in tho district to win a good stake. Mr Scott, of Rangitikoi, the owner, has been unfortunate enough to lose no less than four valuable horses dining the past twelve months. Sic (ran:i : l gloria. . .
