HAWERA.
(from our own correspondent.) A great dramatic treat was afforded to.all who witnessed the performances of of Mr Walton, who, witli his company, gave three performances at the Town Hall, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings last. As Felix O’Oallaghan in His Last Legs he kept the bouse in roars, and is undoubtedly the best comedian who has yet visited these parts. Owing to so many being away harvesting, the. attendance was not as good as it would otherwise have been ; but the fact of the same faces being seen amongst the audience every night, was a sufficient testimony of the excellence of the performance. The Arctic Ifioraina which was to have been exhibited here this evening, is 1 hear, unable to leave Wanganui, a conveyance capable of carrying all the property not being procurable. Our Building Society is now fairly started, many loans having been already applied for and granted/and from the liberal terms held out to borrowing members, it, will no doubt become one of tbe most thriving institutions of the district.
Our farmers are making great, exertions to get in their harvests, while the present line weather lasts, but a great inconvenience is being felt from the scarcity of labour, Maoriea although offered 10s a day, not being procurable, they apparently preferring to earn 2s a day at cutting grass seed. A splendid opportunity offers on Wednesday next, for those desirous of purchasing really first class sections, as Mr John Winks will then dispose by auction of his valimlfie piece of land adjoining the Presbyterian Church, and as most of the available land has already been been disposed of, those who have neglected to provide themselves with sites, should not miss the present opportunity.
It is to he hoped that something will he clone before too late to the road to Normanhy, or wc shall again have it as last winter, utterly impassable.
