WAVERLEY.

• (From our own Correspondent.) A public meeting was held in the Town Hall, on Saturday evening, for the purpose of getting up a day’s amusement in the shape of some sports on Boxing Day. Mr Winchcomb in the chair. Although the idea was only, started on Friday, nearly £SO had been collected, and no doubt considerably more will be got together during this week. On the motion of Mr. Fookes, seconded by Mr J. Dickie, the Recreation Ground on the Town Belt, was chosen as the place for the sports. Proposed by Mr Ballam, seconded by Mr Hume, and carried, That a committee of twelve be appointed to draw up a programme and make all necessary arrangements—the committee to consist of Messrs Winchcomb, Walkinton.A.Drake, Hume, Fookes, Thurston, Read, Taylor, A. Milne, Dempsey; W. Jenkins, and A. Dickie. A pleasant meeting is anticipated. A large building is going up in Bear-street, on tlie .section next to Mr YVinohcorob’s office, which I understand is intended for a blacksmith’s shop by Mr McLeod. The new lock-up is in course of erection, and promises to be an imposing structure by the side of that triumph of architecture—the Police Barracks. It is a pity that the impoverished state of the country will not allow of a coat of paint for the latter. It has braved, 1 forget how many years, the breeze if not the battle, but I should fancy that dry rot will have its way before long, and it will return “ to the vile dust,’’ &c., &c.
