WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.)

At the last meeting of the School Committee there were present Messrs Mason. Thurston, and McDonald. Tenders were opened for fencing and repairing old fence around the school ground—Mr Haines’ tender being accepted, as was also that of Messrs Jones and Stuart for grubbing furze and trimming fences.—Several other tenders were received, but many of them were informal, and indeed in some cases, so badly worded, &c., that the Board could really scarcely make head or tail of them. It would be well for tenderers to be more careful in this respect for the future. Mr F. R. Jackson held a successful sale on Friday, stock realising high prices. A pure bred bull was purchased by Mr Flemming for £l6O, Mr Caverhill being the late owner. A valuable mare belonging to Mr D. Hunter, “shuffled off this mortal coil,” in an abrupt manner last week. One of Mr Hunter’s sons was riding her through Waverley, and when near Mr Read’s shop, she suddenly fell and died almost immediately. An impromptu inquest was held on the ground, but no satisfactory conclusion could

be arrived at as to the cause of death. The young gentleman had a narrow escape, the mare falling on his leg, but with the loss of a boot, lie luckily escaped uninjured. I think I stated in my last that Dr Croft attended Mr J. McLean after his accident, but I am since informed that it was a mistake, that gentleman not having been in attendance. Mr McLean, I am glad to say, is rapidly recovering.
