WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The following items arc from the ; Chronicle’ report : The usual meeting was hold at the Board’s office, Wanganui, ou Wednesday last. Present :—Messrs Watt (in the chair). Jones, Duthie. and Peake.

Lotter from Mr Sanson asking for adjournment of Board until next day, did not find favour, and business was proceeded with. A large mass of correspondence was then read by the Secretary, it considerable portion of which consisted of letters from the Education Department, besides many from various sources on subjects of minor interest.

Resolution was passed to the effect that the Board being at present unable to undertake a system °I military drill, it was hoped that School Committees would, as far as possible, give effect to the Both clause of the Act.

Letter from the Chairman of the Hawera School Committee, respecting a High School, was ordered to be laid aside until the letter on the same subject expected from Palea had been received.

Letter from the Education Department re District High School, consenting to the establishment thereof. It was resolved that the Waitolara Ferry reserve should be applied for, for educational purposes, the settlers being willing that it should be so set aside.

Application from Mr Lee, teacher, Manutahi, for cost of his removal to Wanganui was refused.

In reply to Mr W. Cowern, enclosing statement of accounts of late Patea Educational Board, and an account of A7O due to himself, it was resolved to thank Mr Cowern for his explicit statement, mentioning that the continuance of his appointment was an oversight of the Board, and asking his acceptance of £35 in full settlement of his engagement. The Secretary to write to the various Committees, for money due on account of books. Reply to be sent to the Secretary of the Carlyh School Committee, that as the average attendance last quarter was only 83, the appointment of Pupil Teacher could not be recommended. Further reply to be sent

that £4, stopped from school fund, would be paid from building fund, for gravelling the road to the school, and that the Board will readily grant further accommodation, when such is warranted by the attendance. The meeting adjourned to Thursday, when there were present; W. H. Watt, Esq., (in the chair), Messrs Boss, Fox, Duthie, Peake, Jones, Dalrymple, Sanson and Inspector Fonlis, A long discussion took place on matters affecting the Wanganui School., The salary of the Secretary to the Board was raised to £3OO per annum. Attention was called to the fact that members of country committees were successful tenderers for school buildings, and other works. Several members thought this objectionable, but did not see that the Board should interfere. A ballot was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Act, which resulted in the balloting out of Messrs Fox, Sanson, and Williams. The motion passed some time back to devote the Bees’ bequest to scholarships, was rescinded, the majority of members being in favour of using the proceeds towards helping to pay for efficient teachers for Wanganni High School. Mr Sanson moved motion of which notice had been given to allow of arrangements being made with country schoolmasters for teaching the higher branches of education, in accordance with sections 55, and 56 of the Education Act. After discussion, the motion was agreed to, all voting for it except Mr Duthie. A motion was then moved, discussed, amended and passed, that the salaries of the District High School be—Head Master £SOO per annum : Second do, £300; Head Mistress, £3OO ; Assistant Mistress, £IOO ; and that the second Master and Mistress receive the fees for teaching pupil teachers—£2so of the amount to come out of the Bees’ Bequest. The meeting then adjourned.
