THE REASON WHY.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir,- -From your abridged report of the Court case on Tuesday last (Wiucbcoinb v Baynton, for rates), it seems as if I wished to shirk the rates. The explanation is, that I have parted with the property for which I was summoned to Mr F Byrnes, sen. I applied to him for two-thirds of the Road and County rates, that being the proportion due by him to me,, but he objected, saying that he had not paid any rates for Pntahi deserve, which is exactly in the same position as the land I have been summoned for—viz,, a Native Reserve. T replied, that in that case the Board and County had taken my money illegally, and that I should object to pay the rate, and also demand a refund of the money I had paid.—l am, &c., K J. BAYNTON. Whenuaknra, November 2J. P.S.—ln jus!ice to Mr Winchcomb and the Wairoa Highway Board, 1 find that I am nut to be the exception. o
