The Engineer, in his report, stated that the works at the Breakwater were progressing favorably. “On Sunday last, the heaviest sea and fresh of the season set in, and not a stone was disturbed, although Mr Dickson’s crane was undermined, and thrown up on the beach. The channel is narrow, and the current very strong at the outer end of the work. This will require greater care to be taken on the part of passing vessels, as I am informed that, although there is an iron beacon kept.at the outer point, the s.s. 01}’de touched when going out last week. The very powerful Bconr should, when the present contract is completed, prove a permanent benefit, by giving deeper water.” The Engineer expressed the opinion that the sand spit would not bo wholly removed until the whole works were completed, ileports 'and information for Sir John Goode, had been furnished. The Boiling Down Establishment was about 3JO yards from the Bieakwater, at which point the river was wide and shallow, lie considered it would be injudicious to construct wharves along the river bank, until Sir John Coode had reported as to bow he intended to treat tire river. Would be prepared to advise the construction of a low training will! fiuiii Llie Dlult l.> tlio Mcai.!« on that side of the river, in order to confine the stream from half-tide downwards. A punt of 15 or‘2o tons, light draught, should serve all the purposes of the Boiling Down Company.
