PATEA HORSE PARADE.
The horse parade, and the first cricket match of the season, which events came olf on Saturday, gave quite a bustling appearance to Carlyle all day long. Country people from far and near, were in attendance, as well as a number of Wanganui men. The day was beautiful!}* fine, and on the horses showing out on the green behind the Court House, there was a large gathering of sight seers, and the merits, or otherwise, of the horses, were freely criticised. The general opinion was, that the show of horses was good in botli sections, and a credit to the County. In blood horses, Gladiator stood oiit prominently, the best on the ground, grand in quality, and coming up to what might be expected from his pedigree. He showed more fashionable blood than anything else on the ground, and was admired by all. Hailstorm is a beautiful topped horse, after the manner of his’sire, Pacific; was rather full in flesh, and withers a little !»c. Uodoeiner showed groat strength, but Jacked the quality or nto m.-o, Giaimiuu. Head not shapely, but withal a good looking horse, and secured much attention. Monarch is a useful horse with plenty of bone, with good blood in him. Dalesman and Matipo were rather in the shade as against the others. In draught entires, President held his own against the field. He is a little lighter in the bone than some of the others, but is strong, and a good model, with good action. Major had splendid girth and action, a good model but with heavy head, and should bo a useful horse. Prince of Canterbury is a good model, with good bone and plenty of hair. Conqueror was much fancied, has good forehead, plenty of bone, but coarse hocks, action not sprightly. Victory had managed to break away from his stables for a couple of days before the parade, and was not brought on the ground in the fine fettle he would otherwise have shown. The show altogether was a satisfactory one. There are, however, a number of other horses in the district which were not paraded. The Shetlander breed was represented by Marlinspike.
