PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tim ordinary meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Wednesday last. Present r Messrs G. S. Bridge (chairman), Honey field, Davidson, Livingstone, and Wilson. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed.

Inward and outward correspondence read—including—letter from Mr Carey., claiming £5 for discovery of gravel pit ; from J. Knowles, that excess of expenditure on Mountain Road would be paid ; from 'treasury, that amount had been forwarded ; from \V. C. Wright, tendering W\s resignation as foreman ; from Crown Lands Commissioner, Taranaki, for copy of letter re Sub-Inspector of sheep ; from —, McLean, re contracts Mountain Road ; from 11. 0. Elliot, intimating change of purpose of Carlyle sections 10 to 13 ; from J. Davidson, to admit Robert KenshoJe to hospital ; from Dr Powell, Christchurch, as to cost of curing Jordon ; from Carlyle Town Board, for permission to make alterations on County Koad ; from VV. Aikinan, for advance of £IOO on his contract; from J. Jackson, Carlyle, asking Council to turn water off his property ; from C. Milne, that he would not be at meeting ; correspondence was also read between Foreman of Works and Mr McLean, contractor for work on Mountain Road.

On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Wilson, it was resolved, “ That the hospital patient (Jordon) be sent to Christchurch Hospital for treatment, and that this Council pay cost of attendance there.” Abstract of accounts for September, read and received, showing : Receipts—Genera! rates 1877—78, 2s od ; do., 1878—79, £8 7s 2d ; reimbursements —hospital, £3 ; halfyear’s rent Mokoia Recreation Ground, £1 14s 8d ; do. Waverley Recreation Ground, £l4 2s ; from Government, for Mountain Road, £lO7 2s 8d ; Hog, and other fees, £3 6; total, £137 14s lid. Expenditure— General, £6l Is Id ; Public Works, £167 19s 4d ; Hospital, £32 15s Id ; Mountain Road, £73 12s.—total, £335 7s 6d. The Foreman of works reported that the fine weather had dried the roads, and made them better for traffic, though Manawapo Hill was soft, and required re-gravelling, as also Mokoia Flat, with better material than heretofore used, Tongahoe Hill wanted re-gravelling. From Patea to the Sand Hills, road beginning to break up, and other lengths to Hawera required repairs. Koad from Patea to Waverley in fair condition, except near Mr Newland’s. Waverley to Waitotara required metalling nearly'- the whole distance. Report furnished particulars of repairs required to bridges and culverting in various parts. Mountain Road contracts, Nos. 3 and 4, were completed last month, Nos. 2 and 6 were progressing well, Nos. 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 not yet commenced, though weather part o£ iast month was most favorable for work. Less day labor would be required from present month. On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, £5 was voted to Mr Hill for extras on No. 3 contract. - On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Davidson, resolved, That the Foreman of Works should prepare specifications for various works required to the extent of £5,000. The Council adjourned to 2.3D. Upon reassembling telegram was read from Mr Dale who was unable to be present. Agreed that drain tiles should be procured. On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Davidson, it was resolved “ That with reference to letter 522, the water tables of the road cannot be altered, and that the Patea Town Boaid be requested to cause the water which accumulates on

Town property and runs from down pipes from bui.dings, to be carried away by some other source than by the road water failles” On motion of Mr Davidson, seconded by Mr Wilson, Mr Carey to be informed that the Foreman of Woiks knew of the gravel pit lie claims to have found, and reports the gravel to be of inferior quality. On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, it was agreed, That the Waverley Town Board might take over road under clause 88 Public Works Act, without conditions. On motion of Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr Davidson, The Carlyle Town Board to be allowed to proceed with works specified in letter 519, due regard being paid to the stability of the road and to the drainage. The Council went into committee to open tenders for the office of Foreman. The following were received :—George Rogers, £2O0 —accepted ; W. Harrie £l3B, A. Stewart £l5O, J. Bowie £2OO, C. Billing £2OO, W. C. Wright £2so—declined. On resuming the resignation of Mr Wright was accepted, and the report of the committee adopted. Mr John Black was appointed Returning Officer for Waverley Riding, for Otoia, and for Hawera. On motion of Mr Davidson, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, resolved, “ That Councillor Sherwood be asked to explain why he did not give notice to the chairman of his intended absence at the October ordinary meeting of Council.” Motion of which notice had been given was moved by Mr Livingstone, and seconded by Mr Wilson, “That members of this Council after the 15th November, 1878, be paid 10s per day of sitting, and Is per mile travelling allowance oneway.” An amendment Mr Honeyfield, seconded by Mr Davidson, was carried, To adjourn the discussion until next meeting.” Resolution'appointing MrWreford poundkeeper at Normanby was rescinded. The meeting adjourned.
