WAVERLEY.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) September 30. The party from Normanby, who are endeavoring to trace the Maori Hikori, left here on Thursday, and returned to Waverley on Saturday night. They state that they came across tracks which they have little doubt were those of Hiroki, and followed them up for about fifteen miles inland, the tracks then taking the direction of the Whenuakura, and the fugitive having had a long start, they considered it useless to follow further, so returned to NVaverley, whence they left on Sunday for Patoa with the intention of resuming the search further north. Some of the Maoris in this neighbourhood are of opinion that the supposed murderer is making for Parihaka where, however, judging from recent accounts of Ihe disposition of the natives in that part, ho is not likely to he well received.

The half-yearly inspection of the Wairoa Light Horse took place on Saturday, and was well attended, about fifty answering to their names. The troop turned out well, nearly all now having got their uniform, which was not the case last year. After the inspection, which I believe was most satisfactory, the troop presented Capt. Walkinton with the enp won by them for rifle practice, as a token of their appreciation of his zeal in the promotion of the welfare of the corps. It is pleasant to see a troop sticking together so well, especially since so little encouragement is given to Volunteers now.

The flour-mill has changed hands, Mr R. Dickie being now the proprietor. Judging from the amount of cropping done this year, I should think there is little fear of his repenting of his bargain. At a meeting of the School Committee on Saturday, there were present—Messrs Mason, Thurston, Milne, McDonald, Mathieson, and Dickie. ; —A letter was read from the Chairman of the Carlyle School Committee, re the formation of a High School at Carlyle. It was resolved on the motion of Mr McDonald, that the Chairman be requested to reply, stating what has been done, and asking for further information. —Letter read from Rev A. Dasent, asking for the use of the Waverley school-house for divine service fortnightly at 3 p.m.—Proposed by Mr Mathieson, seconded by Mr McDonald, That the application be granted, and the Chairman requested to make arrangements with the superintendent of the Sunday-school, in order to meet Mr Dasent’s views.—An account from Mr H. I. Jones, 19s 6d for stationery, was passed for payment.—A rough estimate of the cost of fencing and other repairs which are urgently' needed, was made, and the Chairman will submit the same to the Board, for approval.— Some few complaints relative to the school, having been made to some of the members of the Committee individually, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Milne, seconded by Mr Dickie, that any complaints against the management of the school, must be made in writing to the committee.
