WAIMATE PLAINS TOWNSHIP.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, —In passing along the main road a few clays since, the proposed site of the new Government Township on the Waitnate Plains was pointed out to me. Experience should have taught those in authority, that the selection of a township requires care and consideration, and that the most important consideration in choosing a site, is to secure good drainage, and to insure the health of intending inhabitants. This important consideration has been entirely overlooked, and the site of the proposed township has been fixed in the only wet tee tree flat to be seen on the Waimate Plains. A most delightful spot, where, in winter, water closets will be brimming full of water, that will then percolate into the adjacent wells. The site is said to have been selected by Mr Humphries, the Chief Surveyor of New
Plymouth. It is to be regretted that a selection requiring so much care and consideration, should have been left to one who is either incompetent, or has not taken tiie trouble to consider the features of the country or requirements necessary to ensure health and cleanliness.
The proposed township being in the Patca Coumy, the selection of a site ought to have been left to the Patea County authorities, who would have selected a site where town sections would sell to the best advantage. Certainly they would not have placed it on the wettest flat to be sccn'on the Waimate Plains.—l am, &c., VIATOR. — : $
