WHAKAMARA ROAD LINES.
(Tu the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, —I see in your paper of the 21st instant, a letter headed as above, and signed “Do Right*” If “Do Right” had said make the road to sections 3 and 4, people would have known what he wanted, but to propose to open up the block in the manner ho describes, would suit none but “Do Right.” It appears to me that the Board is acting like the man with the donkey, trying to please all, and will, therefore, please none. On looking at the map, I find that there are thirty-one sections in the old block—l 9 sections or 950 acres would require the Noonan Road opened, while 12 sections or COO acres require the Ingahapi Road. I am of opinion that the Board made great mistake in trying to open two roads into the block this year. If the Board had decided to spend the £650 on the road they commenced last year, I believe it would have been to the advantage of the back deferred payment sections. If £4OO was spent on the Noonan Road it would make a good road as far as the junction at sections 4, 7, and 10, on the now block. From there towards 22 and 23 is a level road and £IOO would make a dray track to the boundary of the block in that direction. The other £ lot) could then be spent on the road across the Otoki, as there are other deferred payment sections besides Nos. 1, 2, and 3, I believe the above manner of expending the money 7 would give most satisfaction.
“Do Right” says that (lie Noonan E.oad would answer the purpose of the speculative purchasers. 1 think the owners of the land on the Noonan Road are making more improvements than any others on the block, and if they had a good road, houses would soon be seen on the lands of the speculative owners. It is a great pity but that more of the same sort was on the Whakamara block.
I may inform ' -i Do Right” that them are likely to he objections to the proposed manner of expenditure, as the deferred payment gentleman has got the ear of two of onr County Conneillora, not to allow the deferred payment money to be mixed witli the rates. — [ am. &u , CLITIC GUM. o
