WAVERLEY.

(from our own correspondent.) A public meeting waslield on Saturday evening last, in the Town Hail, for the purpose of considering the late proposed insertion of a rating clause in the Fatea Harbor Bill. Mr Peat was voted to the chair. Mr Milne spoke at length on the subject, arguing that the ratepayers were already heavily taxed, and that the Patea Harbor would, when completed, be of comparatively small use to the people of the Waverley Biding. He also stated that the County Council had received telegrams from Messrs Bridge and Sherwood, from Wellington, recommending the members to pass a resolution to get the said clause inserted, which, however, the Council considered it had no right to do. Mr Milne concluded by moving a resolution condemnatory of the rating clause, which was seconded by Captain Howland, and carried unanimously. Mr Kenah also spoke on the subject, and condemned the action of Mr Bridge, in communicating with the Council in the manner stated by Mr Milne—considering that he (Mr Bridge) had, in so doing, exceeded his duty. He concurred fully in Mr Milne’s motion. Mr Winchcomb then produced a telegram from Mr Sherwood, stating that the objectionable clause was not in-

sorted in the Act. No further steps',

therefore, were necessary on the part of the settlers.

It was, notwithstanding, resolved, on the motion of Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Winchcomb—That copies ot Mr Milne’s motion be forwarded to both members for the district.

Mr Milne tried to bring 0.1 the railway line question, but the meeting appeared to think it bolter left alone, as no resolution was brought forward. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
