REPRESENTATION-HARBOR BILL.
The following is copy of letter received by Dr Grui'r, Chairman of late public mooting, in reply to resolutions telegraphed to Government : “ Colonial Sccietary’s Office, “ Wellington, August, 15, 1878. “ Archer C, Croft, Esq., Carlyle, “ Sir, — i have the honor, by direction of the Colonial Secretary, to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of the 10th instant, in which, as Chairman, you forward two resolutions passed at a public meeting at Carlyle—the first urging the Government to take into consideration the claim of the County of Patea to a representative in the General Assembly ; the second tnging the Government to give an Amended Harbor Bill, with endowments and borrowing powers, their favourable consideration.
“ With regard to the first resolution, I am to inform you that, when the distribution of scats in the House of Representatives as a whole is being settled, the claim of the County of Patea will be carefully considered. “ As regards the second, I cam to state that the Government cannot undertake to support a Bill which they have not seen. I am to add that a General Harbor Bill is now before Parliament. “ I have, &c., “G. S. COOPER.”
