PUBLIC AFFAIRS MEETING.

A well attended meeting, ot town and country settlers, called on requisition of residents, and duly advertised, was held in the Carlyle Town Hall, on Friday evening last. Dr Croft was voted to the chair. On account of the lateness of the hour at which the meeting closed, we were unable to obtain for publication all the resolutions passed in time for last issue. They will bo found below. It will be seen in the resolution as to Harbor Works Bill, that no reference was made to rating clauses, as previously stated. Proposed by MrTregear, seconded by Mr Aitchison, and carried unanimously:— That this meeting hear with regret that it is intended to remove the Survey Officer, maps, and records concerning the lands of this County to the Town of New Plymouth, and hope that the Government will not only interfere to prevent such injustice, but rather give us additional facilities by creating a Land Board for the Patea County; that the present Survey Offioer is one whose local knowledge peculiarly fits him for employment here, and that to take away the survey information will entail an expensive and disadvantageous journey both to settlers and strangers desiring to buy land. We therefore earnestly request the Government to retain this officer and information, and to give to Patea County more direct control over its land sales than wo now possess.” Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Milroy, and carried, “ That a full copy of the resolution just passed, bo sent to the Minister for Crown Lands, Major Atkinson, and Mr Sherwood.”

Proposed by Mr John Gibson, seconded by Mr E. It. Morgan, and carried unanimously, “ That this meeting- urge upon the Government to take into its consideration the claim of the Patea County to a representative in the General Assembly, instead of being divided between the district of Egraont on the Taranaki side, and the Wanganui District on the oilier.” Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Taplin, and carried unanimously, ‘‘ That this meeting recognizes the importance to the district of the Patea Harbor Works, now in progress, and earnestly urge the Government to give an Amended Harbor Bill, with endowments and borrowingpowers, their favorable consideration,” We are indebted to the courtesy of Dr Croft for the following copies of telegrams received in reply to resolutions passed at Friday’s public meeting—- “ Wellington August 10th, 1878. Archer A. Croft, Esq., Chairman Public Meeting. Patea. Am desired by the Hon Minister of Lands to state that it is not intended to close the Lands Office, Patea. Certified copies of all original records will be deposited there, and a qualified officer will bo stationed there to afford information to tire public. H. J. 11. Elliott.” “ Government Buildings, August 10th, 1878. Dr Croft, Patea. Have seen Minister for Lands. Says no intention to close Office. Has telegraphed you. H. A. Atkinson.”
