(FROM our own correspondent.) July 30. On Thursday, ISlli instant, our Debating Society endeavored to ascertain whether a Miser or a Spendthrift does the greater harm to Society. The subject was ably brought forward by Mr Steuart, supported by Mr Lee, in favor of the spendthrift doing less harm than the miser. Mr G. W. Gane, supported by Mr Dawson, took the opposite view. It was decided by a large majority that a miser docs the greatest harm. A vote of thanks to the chairman (Mr H. Wright) concluded the evening. Thursday evening, 25th instant, was an open entertainment. The Blockhouse well tilled by an appreciative audience, amongst whom were a number of ladies. Songs, readings, recitations, &c., were contributed by Messrs Guthrie, D. Ginger, Lee, C. Symes, Kelly, Proctor, and Dawson. The National Anthem and a vote of thanks to Mr John Ginger, as chairman, concluded the performance. Subject for debate on Thursday, Ist August—“ The best means of Civilising a Barbarous Nation,” to be brought forward by Mr Leo.
