R.M. RESERVE NOT FOR THE HARBOUR.
A public meeting was lately held at Carlyle, on requisition of ratepayers, in reference to what is known as the R. M. Reserve. Resolution was passed asking Government to hand it over to the Harbour Board. Though the . site had been partly promised previously, and authority issued for the Harbour Board to take possession, the following reply to resolution of public meeting has been received by G. F. Sherwood, Esq: “ Immigration Office, “Wellington, Bth July, 1878.
“ Sir, — T have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th ultimo transmitting copies of resolutions passed at a public meeting held at Carlyle to the effect that the Government should hand over the site commonly known ns the “ Resident Magistrates Reserve” in that township as an endowment for the Harbour Board, and in reply to inform you that the Government is unable to comply with the request of the public meeting.
“ It has been decided, however, to dispose of the site by public auction as land of special value, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and District Land Officer, have been communicated with accordingly,—l have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant, “ H. J. H. Elliot, “ Under-Secretary for Crown Lands. “ G. F. Sherwood, Esq., “Chairman Public Meeting, Patea.”
