LAND—EDUCATIONAL.
The following items of interest to Patea, are given in Herald's report of Taranaki Waste Lands Board proceedings, on Monday, the Bth July— The usual monthly report of the Chief Surveyor was read. It stated—“ The plans of Mr Fooke’s 5,000 acres have just been received, the field-work being completed immediately the necsssary examination has been made. I will forward you a tracing myself, probably next week. . . . One thousand two hundred and fifty acres in the Ngaru district have also been finished, which will make about 3,000 acres near Stratford not yet offered for sale. Survey operations during the past month have been nearly at a standstill, owing to the very wet weather, and I do not anticipate having any more surveys completed before the end of September.”
A letter was read from the Undersecretary, stating that the Government approved of the “resolution of the Land Board of the 11th instant relative to the classification of the site of Stratford as town land.”—The Chairman said he was receiving enquiries from all parts of the colony relative to the Township of Stratford.— ft was resolved, That the Township of Stratford, as classified and priced by the Board, and approved by the Governor, be sold at auction on Saturday, the 31st August, at 11 a.m., at the Taranaki Institute, by the Commissioner of Crown Lands. A letter was read from the Undersecretary, stating Government had changed the purpose of one acre of section No. 19, Town of Hawera, from a “ site for a telegraph station or other purpose of the General Government,” to “ a site for offices of Town Board of Hawera.” A letter was read from Captain Wray, in reply to the Board’s letter requesting information as to the present state of the University reserve of ten thousand acres, and forwarding a tracing of the proposed boundaries, as submitted by him to the Under-Secretary. The lettersaid : “lam informed that the Pukorukoru hapu at Whenuakura, to whom one thousand acres was granted by the late Sir Donald McLean, have included a portion of the southern part of the proposed University reserve in a lease to Mr Gower, but until the survey is made I cannot say how far this report is correct. I would submit for the consideration of the Board the propriety of surveying this native reserve, with a view of placing it in the market the balance between the area to be allotted them, and the waste land adjoining. So far as I understand from Major Brown, there need be no difficulty, as far as the natives are concerned, in this matter.”
At meeting of the Taranaki Education Board held at New Plymouth, on Monday, the Bth instant, the Chairman read the following statement as to how the subsidy to libraries was proposed to bo distributed: —
Patea Library caused comment, and it was resolved, “ That the Secretary write to the Patea Library,’•Committee,;, to ascertain if any part of the amouat.stated was contributed by the County . Council, or any public body, or whether the whole was by subscriptions.”—The> amounts to the other libraries were ordered-to-be paid at once.
