WAVERLEY.
(FROM OUR OWN CORIiHSX’OSDENT.)
July 9. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at a quarter past ten on Friday night last.
The Hon Mr Sheehan passed through Waverley yesterday, accompanied by Major Brown, and a considerable number of natives. He remained for about half an hour, for the purpose of holding an investigation of some ..charges brought by the Maoris of Momahaki against the Europeans employed in connection with the survey of that Block, to the effect that the native women had been ill-treated by the said Pakehas. Several men who bad been employed there were examined, when, so far as I could understand, it was shown that the women were simply prevented from destroying the bridge, but that no undue severity was shown them. It appears that one woman who was making desperate attempts to get on the bridge, received a push, and her foot slipping, she fell and sustained someinjury, hinc illce lachrymal. The whole thing was very ridiculous, but I suppose some little excitement must bo kept up for appearance sake. Mr Winchcomb waited on the Native Minister, to jog his-memory re the holding of the R.M. Court here,-and was instructed to communicate with Mr Sheehan by letter.
On the arrival of the /up coach at the Welcome Stranger yesterday, one of .the horses turning restiyey one of the traces broke, and short delay thereby occasioned, fortunately no further barm was done, as a few minutes sufficed to repair the damage.
