THE LAWS OF NEW ZEALAND.
Chronological tables of the Provincial hiw of New Zealand, with schedules of the Acts passed by the various Provincial Councils, have been issued from the General Government Printing Office, "Wellington. Every information on this subject that the ■ curious could desire seems to have been included in these ' papers, which comprise over 70 pages of closely tabulated matter. In all we find that from first to last 2,259 Acts were passed by the Councils, of which number 234 were either “ disallowed by the Governor,” “ not assented,” .or his “assent withheld” therefrom. Otago has been the most prolific Actmalcer, heading the list with 515, of which 72 were disallowed. Auckland produced 316, disallowed 20 ; Taranaki 203, disallowed 25 ; Hawkes Bay 138, disallowed 15 ; Nelson 195, disallowed 12; Canterbury 392, disallowed 42; Westland 13 disallowed 0; Wellington. 263, disallowed 21; Southland i.03, disallowed 39. Of the two thousand and odd Acts passed, 581 were in force at the close of the session of Parliament of 1877- A glance through the schedule shows that this law-making was mainly on purely local subjects, and as only a small per centage of thorn were, apparently, unnecessary, the work that will be thrown on the General Assembly by Abolition must be enormous, and of a kind difficult to perform in that very general assemblage of representatives; The Acts in force in 1877 are apportioned as follows Auckland 67, Taranaki 43 Hawke’s Bay 34, Nelson 54, Marlborough 32, Canterbury 82, Westland 3, Otago 210, Southland 8, and Wellington 39. According to. the tables, the Provincial Council of Auckland held 30 sessions from 1854 to 1857 f inclusive ; Taranaki, 24 , from 1853 to 1857 ; Hawke’s Bay, 22 from 1859 to 1875; Wellington, 28 from 1853 to 1875 ; Nelson, 26 from 1853 to 1875 ; Marlborough,- 27 from 1860 to 1875 ; Canterbury, ,42 from 1853 to 1875 ; Westland, 3 from 1874 to 1875; Otago j 34 from 1354 to 1875 ; and Southland, 24 from ISGI to 1869.—Grey Argus
