MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT CLASS.
In response to advertised notice, a well attended meeting of persons desirous of holding regular meetings for discussion, was held in the Council Buildings on Monday evening last. The Rev P. W, Fairclough was voted to the chair. Moved by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr Taplin, and resolved, “ That in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that a society be formed, to be called the Patea Mutual Improvement Society.” Amendment moved by Mr Tennent, seconded by Mr Hirst, and lost, “ That the words 1 Mutual Improvement ’ be struck out, and the-word ‘Debating’ be inserted.” Moved by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Thomson, and resolved, “ That the gentlemen now present form the society, and that a provisional committee of five be appointed.” Moved by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr Taplin, and resolved, “ That Mr J. Black be appointed provisional Secretary and Treasurer.” Resolved that the following gentlemen be the members of the provisional committee Rev P. W. Fairclough, Messrs Sherwood, Thomson, Kenworthy, and J. Black. Moved by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr Tennent, and resolved, “ That the committee bo asked & to prepare rules, and submit the same to an adjourned general meeting.” Moved by Mr E. A. Adams, seconded by Mr Wood, and resolved, “That the rules be submitted before opening the list of members.” Moved by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr W.Williams, jun., and resolved, “Thatthe Secretary be asked to write to the County Council asking that the Council room be placed at the disposal of the society, for the purpose of holding its meetings therein.” Vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
