CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held on Monday evening last, in the County Council Buildings. Present: Messrs Milroy (chairman), Aitchison, Adams, Dale, Hirst, and Taplin. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence read. , Sergeant Whelan reported culvert in Bedford-street was likely to become dangerous to passengers, through late rains , having washed quantity of earth away, close to the margin of the road. Hole also in the footpath near Mr H. E. P. Adams’ office, Taranaki Eoad. Eleven head of cattle had been impounded during month, and persons in the habit of allowing their cattle to wander, had been summoned. Also reported that on Sunday night, the 9th instant, no light had been placed on or near pile of bricks in Leicester Street, as required by the Public Works Act. .
On motion of Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Adams, it was resolved, That the application of Mr Howitt, to sub-lease portion of Block 40, should be held over until the present lessee, Mr Williams, had sent in application. Proposed by Mr Aitchison, and seconded by Mr Milroy, “ That the Secretary communicate with the County Council, informing that body that this Board is willing to agree to the proposition made by the County Council Committee re main road, and also ask'for an advance of £2O for immediate repairs much needed.” Carried on division. Ayes Milroy, Aitchison, Adams, Taplin, Hirst. Noes— Dale. An amendment moved by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Adams, “That all the
words after ‘main road’ be struck out,” was lost.
Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Taplin, and carried on division, “ That this Board approve of a resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers held in the Town Hall, on the first June ultimo, requesting the Government to hand over to the Patea Harbour Board the Eesident Magistrate’s Reserve, Carlyle, for Harbour improvements,- and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Government, and to the Patea Harbour Board.” Ayes— Milroy, Aitchison, Adams Taplin, Dale. Noes—Hirst.*
Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Adams, and lost on division, “ That Major Atkinson be requested to bring in a Bill, during the next session of the House of Representatives, giving this Board the power to borrow a sum not exceeding £3,000, to he expended in Town Improvements, the interest oh loan to be a fixed charge on rents received from town leases.” —Ayes—Dale, Adams. Noes Milroy,' Aitchison, Taplin, Hirst. Mr Dale moved That the question of the Board endeavoring to get borrowing powers from the House of Representatives this session, be referred to a meeting of ratepayers. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder.
On motion of Mr seconded by Mr Milroy, it was resolved, That Mr Haywood be informed that the Board cannot entertain his application re fencing across certain streets, except Suffolk-street, which it will permit him to fence off, if he choses to d > so subject to the usual conditions,”
On motion of Mr Tapi in, seconded by Mr-Aitchison, it was resolved, That section No. 7, Block 40, should be reserved from the forthcoming sale, for Town Board purposes. Mr William Cowern’a resignation as Returning Officer was received and accepted. Mr D. M. Harris was appointed Returning Officer to the Board. The Inspector of Nuisances’ Report was received.
On the motion of Mr Milro}% seconded by Mr Hirst, it was resolved, That the Inspector of Nuisances’ Report be referred to the Working Committee, who were empowered to have necessary repairs made in places complained of.
Statement of accounts for June showed— Receipts ; Balance from May, £144 5s Id; received during June, £lB 7s. Expenditure : £2B 2s 2d—-leaving a credit balance of £134 9s lid.
Accounts were passed, and the meeting adjourned.
