CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the Council Buildings, on Monday evening last. Present : Messrs Sherwood (in the chair), Adams, Aitcbison, Goutts, Milroy, Taplin, and Williams. Minutes of previous ordinary, and two special meetings, read and confirmed. Correspondence—Letter from J. Lndlam, for permission to transfer Block 32 to T. Haywood, sen. ; from T, Haywood, sen., agreeing to transfer—agreed to, on condition that rent now due be paid ; from G. D. Hamerton, acknowledging receipt of W. Williams’ deed ; from County Council, that Board’s request, re forming main road, &c., could not be entertained ; from Under-Secretary, notifying appointment of W. Cowern as auditor ; from Holthain and Warren, as to levels of Institute buildings ; from D. G. Fraser, enclosing plans ami specifications for footpaths ; from W. Cowern, for extension of time for auditing; from same, with report on accounts. Mr Haywood’s application for. closing street to lie on table.

The Inspector of Nuisances reported seventeen head of cattle impounded during month, fees for which poundkeeper was responsible. Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Taplin, and carried unanimously, “That the attention of the Sergeant of Police be called to the want of a proper light being kept burning on stack of bricks now on Leicester Street, in terms of authority' given to Mr Gibson to occupy the street.” Proposed by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Sherwood, and carried, “That a sum of £lO be advanced to the trustees of the Cricket and Athletic Grounds, the amount to be debited to the Recreation Rent Account.” Ayes Sherwood, Williams, Taplin, Coutts, Aitchison, and Milroy. Noes—Adams.

Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded' by Mr Taplin. and carried unanimously, “ That the Chairman (Mr Sherwood) receive the sanction of this Board, to call a public meeting, at an early date, to consider the railway question, in co-operation with the

other Hidings of the County, as requested by the Chairman of the Waverley Committee.”

Report from late Working Committee was read, stating that £6 13s had been expended in cleaning and repairing streets (part only authorized). The'taking of levels throughout the town, had been left entirely to Engineer, who had promised to send in plan for ordinary meeting to be held to-day (June 3rd), Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Sherwood, and carried, “That this Board approves of, and endorses, all works undertaken by the late Working Committee up to date.” Proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Coufcts, and carried, “ That a deputation consisting of Messrs Taplin and Williams be appointed to wait on the County Council at its next meeting and urge upon it the necessity existing for some extensive improvements being made to the main road running through the town, and request their co-operation in carrying out the improvements ; and if no money aid can be obtained, to confer with the Council as to the method on which it would agree to have the work done, if carried out by this Board itself.” Tenders were received for formation of footpaths from J. Johnson, Unthanks Road and Staffiord-street about 16 chains, £3l) 12s—accepted. Proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Milro3 r , and carried, “That special vote of thanks and confidence be accorded Mr G. If. Sherwood for the very efficient manner ho lias conducted the affairs of this Board as Chairman, since its formation.” On this motion, all the members, except Mr Adams, spoke in eulogistic terms of the ability and tact with which the affairs of the Board had been conducted under Mr Sherwood, his retirement from the Board being.considered a loss to the community at large. Statement of accounts for month of May allowed; Receipts Balance from April, £l3l 5s 7d ; received during month, £3O 6s lOd. Expenditure —£17 7s 4d, leaving a balance of £144 6s Id. Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting closed.
