[PER PRESS AGENCY.] CHRISTCHURCH. May 21. At the Chamber of Commerce great regret was expressed at New Zealand not being represented at the Cable Conference. The chairman was requested to communicate with Government to ascertain whether they intend to give substantial support to volunteers or call out the militia.
Census returns published show the total population of the province to be 92,438, being an increase since 1874 of 33,658; Christchurch City 13,408, being an increase of 3,114; Lyttelton 3,476, being an increase of 1,413; Timnru 5,382, being an increase of 582. , The population of Christchurch and suburbs is estimated at 30,300. GISBORNE. May* 21. The Patntahi Block. 20,000 acres, sold to-day, cut up into town, suburban, and country’ sections. Large attendance. Competition brisk. . Quarter acre section at upset price £ls realized £2O and up to £3O. First-class rural lauds averaged £9 per acre. Small portion of second and third class land was sold at ups *t price. In all other cases nearly’ double was realized. WELLINGTON. May 21. The New Zealand and Mercantile Ag ncy report, under date Loudon, loth May, that wool sales opened at an average decline of half to Id per lb. or last prices. Principal decline has been medium and inferior cross bred. Seventeen thousand bales have been sent to manufacturing districts direct. Tbe opening catalogue • contained 8,500 bales. Government has received the following cablegram from Sir Julius Vogel ; “ London, May 11th. Bill accepted. Advance obtained to meet bills falling due. Prospects of peace improving- Hope soon to negotiate loan. Larnach has arrived,— Vogel."
