A few larrikins were ploying up about Carlyle on Sunday night, and gates and such like articles were removed from one place to another. Lettering on doorways had also been freely indulged in. As there are but two police in the place, who have to do both day and night duty, the 'pranking does not evidence any extraordinary pluck, as it is impossible for the two officers to be always about. The larrikins may have watched the officer safe away on one part of his beat, and then commenced their not very creditable pranks. Another policeman should bo stationed here, which would make it unsafe for mischievous night prowlers to indulge in such freaks. It is impossible for two officers to perform continuous day and night duty. Two meetings of the Patca Breakwater .Foundation Slone Committee have been held. Messrs Nicholas and (Jo opened their new establishment at Wanganui with a choice stock of well assorted drapery, on Saturday night last. The Wanganui Herald says —The Patea people have very righilydetermincd to celebrate the laying of the i'onndafion stone of the Harbor Works with a public demonstration. A meeting was held at Carlyle on Thursday last, and a Committee appointed to make the necessary arrangements. One resolution passed at the meeting - particularly struck us as being especially just, and that was that the Chairman of the Harbor Board should have the honor of laying the stone. We are indeed pleased to notice that the Patea people are ready to give honor where it is due. it is certain that the advanced stage of the Patea Harbor improvements is mainly due to the indomitable perseverance and energy of the Chairman, and beyond the fact that the premier position at the demonstration is his by virtue of Ids official position, yet it also in a measure may he taken as a slight recognition of his past labors. A correspondent from Ilawcra writes—- “ Application lias, been made to some of the mem hers of the To wn Board for .subscriptions to get up a regatta, it being considered that there is sufficient water on the streets for the purpose.—On Saturday last, during the gale, the Catholic Church

here nearly came to grief. It was moved along about eight inches, and only just scoured in time to save a crash. —The Chess Club lias re-formed, and members meet for practice as announced.”
