TARANAKI RACES.
The weather was fine on the second day of the races. Course in excel lent order, and a large assemblage of people. Hurdle Handicap, of SOsovs; 2 miles. Over 9 flights of hurdles, 3ft Din'high. Mr J. Lyon’s Uira. KXst 1 Mr Brewer’s Gazelle, Ust 711) 2 Betting—3 to 1 on Gazelle. Gazelie made the running for a mile and three quarters, when Uira gradually dosed with the leader, who jumped the last htndle half a length in advance when fairly in the straight both jockeys were ’hard at work. The non-favorite won a most exciting race, by a short neck, both horses jumping beautifully. Edwards, rider of Uira, got great credit for the manner lie rode in the Handicap Hurdle Race, ha having won by sheer riding at the finish. Autumn Handicap, of lOUsovs ; one and three quarters miles. Queen of the Vale, 6st 121b, (declared 31bs over) 1 Otawa, Bst ylbs ... ... ... ... 2 Flora McDonald, 7&t 31 bs 3 Queen of the Vale and Otawa, first to show in front, with Tuna in close attendance. Flora, forcing the pace lead into the straight, Gang Forward acting as whipper in, Otawa and Queen of the Vale racing neck and neck, gave Flora the go by at GUO yards from finish where she was beaten. Queen of the Vale deprived Otawa of mud on entering the straight, ran for home, and won in a canter by two lengths, Flora McDonald third. Betting 6 to 4 against Queen of the Vale, 2 to 1 against Otawa, 4 to 1 against Flora. McDonald. Harbor Stakes, of 40sovs. Entrance, 3 sovs. Once round and a distance. Open to horses owned by residents in the county for at least sis months previous to the race meeting. Mr George’s Resolution ... ... 1 Mr Paul’s Chanticleer ... 2 Mr Gilpin’s Speculator... ... ... 3 Kailway Plate, of SOsovs. Entrance 2 sovs. Distance miles. Weight for age.Mr George’s Resolution 1 Chadwick and Belcher’s May Moon ... 2 Mr Lyon’s Tamatca 3 Gladys, Redeemer, and Emblem also ran. Gladys led till the straight was reached, when Resolution and May Moon passed her. Consolation Stakes, of 20sovs. Entrance, Isov. Handicap for all beaten horses. Distance, 1 mile. Chadwick and Belcher’s May Moon ... 1 Dr Earl’s Charity Girl 2 Mr Handley’s Flora McDonald..-. ... 3
