RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT—CARLYLE.
<► Thursday, April. 4. (Before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.) RACES SWEEP. Sergeant Whelan charged Henry Chadwick, of Carlyle, with having publicly exercised, and kept open, and exposed to be drawn for, on the 20t.'a February last, a certain lottery, called the “Grand {Sweep on the Patea J. C. Handicap, 1878.” A fine of £2 and cost 7s was inllicted. A. C. Croft, was also charged that he “ did draw at a certain lottery in Carlyle, called the ‘ Grand Sweep on the Patea J. C. Handicap, 1878.’” Pined 5s and costs 7s. D. M. Harris, for being present at the lottery, and for that he “ did aid then and there unlawfully and wilfully aid and abet one Henry Chadwick in the drawing and exercising of the said lottery,” was fined 5s and costs 7s. Similar charges against 11. R. P. Adams, and R. E. Mcßae, were adjourned for one week. ASSAULT. Carl Huber, of Kakaramea, charged James Hansen with assaulting Inin at Carlyle. Witnesses were examined, the evidence being somewhat contradictory, and the case was dismissed with costs 11s fid, and witness Bs.
