HAWERA.

(from OUR OWN 1 ■•COBRfePO'NDRNT.) A cricket match was .playSTat' Waiiii on Wednesday last, between'ah eleven of the A.C. Force stationed at Waihi, New Plymouth and the intermediate stations,•' and an eleven from civilians-in the, fatea County. The day was lovely, with a gentle fresh breeze, that added as much to the pleasure of the spectators as to those who were taking an active , part. The A.C.’s were'the first to take the -wickets, and placed 59 to their credit before being disposed of. Harrison made the top score of 21, which he put together by real good play. Hargood followed next with 8, and made a long stand at the 'wickets, playing steady and carefully. ■ The rest were disposed of very easily, the bowling on the County, side, especially that of F. Bayley, being very effective. The County team commenced their innings by sending in their crack man Beresford and the colt Coutts, the former of whom seemed determined not to lose his well earned reputation. -He defended his -wickets =m his usual cool and skilfulnnanner, and had obtained 23 before Cleary was able -to find out his stumps. Fraser and Eiddiford made 10 and 7 respectively, both playing with great F. Bayly played a very smart innings for ; 16, making some splendid cuts and drives to off. Taplin, the leviathon, made 8 in a very lively manner, and is evidently heart and soul in the game. He was loudly-cheered'by both sides on returning. Jacomb bad just got settled to work, when he was well caught out by Harrison. Kitchin played a good innings for 5, the whole closing for a total of 86, being 27 over their opponents. The A.C.’s in their second innings made 75 of which Johnstone contributed 32, being the top score of the day. His was a fine exhibition of batting, and be was loudly and deservedly cheered. This left the County team 49 to get to winpand as the time was very short, there seemed 'little chance of the match being played but,- They, however, seemed determined fo .wipe out the balance if possible, and Had-knocked up 44 ■ when the umpire called ‘‘timej” although there was yet 8 minutes to run. The County team thus won in the first innings by 27 runs. Seven handsoine meerschaum pipes were offered by Mr Beresford as prizes,-to obtain which everyone did his best. Johnstone and Harrison were the . two highest scorers on the A.C. side, and obtained one each, Cleary taking the prize for the best average • bowling. On - the County side Beresford and Bayly took the two for the highest scores, Bayly also taking one for the best average bowler. The prize for the best long stop fell to Hargood, A first class lunch was provided . in one of the Block-houses, and from the manner in which it disappeared, it seemed questionable if the match could with safety be continued, however we are happy to record that no evil efcects'followed. ’■
