NOTES FROM NORMANBY.
(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) The first of a series of Presbyterian' services •was held here on Sunday evening the 10th instant, when the Rev Mr Terry preached to a large congregation. It is the intention of the Wesleyans also to' start services before long. This churchmaking idea shows that we are more at leisure now- Hitherto the townspeople have had their hands full—carrying the township through the first period of itg existence.
Another new thing here was the late cattle sale, when Messrs Thompson and McGuire put up a large number of cattle ot various kinds. It is a pity more buyers did not come forward. The series of meetings, petitions general agitations about the Mountain Road, are at length bearing fruit. The preliminary works are being pushed ori with an energy very pleasing to' see; The contracts for the various sections of . road work are expected soon to be out; At present one party of surveyors is at work cutting a line through that portion* of bush which is to form the main lino ot road through the township, while' another is at work on the mountain road itself.
If a person who had been away from here for some eighteen months were now to return, the changed appearance of things would surprise him. All the' trades usually found in country towns have now representatives in Norm'anby for have we not ‘carpenters, blacksmith,* saddler, butcher, shoemaker and baker,; not to speak of two stores, and two hotel keepers.
