MOUNTAIN ROAD
The Taranaki Herald of Monday last says ; i —On Saturday a telegram, signed by the three members of the House, Major Atkinson, and Messrs Carrington and Kelly, was sent to the Minister of Public Works, and was t6 the effect that they agreed with the reports of Mr T. Humphries, Chief Surveyor ; Mr Robinson, Ranger connected with the Waste Lands Board ; and Mr Skinner, the County Engineer, with regard to the Mountain Road going through Norman by, but not by the laid ofit line of road through the standing bush, which would be very costly and delay the opening of the road at least one year. It was very important that the road should be opened for coach traffic quickly, and they hoped the Government would reconsider its decision. Probably on account of the above, and other representations which have been made to Government, the following telegram, to the Chairman of the Patea County Council, may have resulted : Wellington, March 14. The Chairman County Council, Carlyle. The Hon the Minister of Public Works will be obliged if you will inform him what is the opinion of the County Council as to the route of the Mountain Road. Are they of opinion that it should go through Normanby and on by the proclaimed line to Te Roti; or are they of opinion that it should reach Te Roti by the old Hbe laid but by Captain Blake. Reply please. Urgent. John Knowles. The Patea County Council Chairman (G. S. Bridge; Esq.), happening to be in Carlyle on Thursday, the following reply was sent : Carlyle, March 14. John Knowles, Wellington. County Council of opinion that the Mountain Road should be taken through Normanby—thence to Te Roti by the old line laid out by Captain Blake. G. S. Bridge. Government Buildings, Wellington, March 14. G. S. Bridge, Chairman County Council, Patea. Having considered all the circumstances the Hon the Minister for Public Works has resolved not to raise any objection to the County Council making the road through Normanby, and thence by Captain Blake’s old line. “ The Public Works Act, 1876,” confers on the Council the necessary power and points out the steps to be taken. John Knowles.
