WELLINGTON. February 5. The City of Sydney left San Francisco for Auckland on 21st January, the contract date, with the London January mail for New Zealand.
The Australia arrived at San Francisco on 29th January, two days before due date, with the New Zealand mail for London.
To-mght’s Post aays it lias been arranged that the Hon Mr Larnach will shortly proceed to England, as one of the agents appointed to raise a new loan. Before leaving Mr Lanarch will retire from the Cabinet and resign his seat in the, Assembly. . The negotiation connected with the raising of the loan will be entrusted to Julyan and Sergeant, and the Agent-General and Mr Lanarch, as directly representing the Colony. It is probable that Mr Lanarch, on resigning his seat in the Assembly, will be called to the Upper House. An address to the electors is published on behalf of George Elliott Barton by his son, announcing that his father will contest the seat for Wellington city, against Pearce, in the interest of Sir George Grey, On the return of Sir George Grey from Waikato, he will be asked to address a public meeting at Wellington;
CARLYLE TOWN BOARD. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the County Council Buildings; on Monday evening last. Present: Messrs Sherwood (in the chair), Aitchison, Adams,- Coutts, Milroy, Taplin, and Williams. Minutes of previous meeting read, ..amended, and confirmed. Minutes of special meeting also read and confirmed. Correspondence read—From J. Milroy and W. Aitchison, to call special meeting for 15th January ; from J. Whelan, to transfer town section to D. M. Wairen ; from D. M. Warron, re J. Whelan’s section; from J. Milroy, requesting clerk to order limber specified from Kotemarao ; from S. T. Fitzherbert, stating that as he had received a letter from W. Dale, he would not require to appear for Board ; from J. Black; for County Council rates—E. Lyttelton and J. Johnson ; from James Mercer, applying for lease of sections 2 to 11, Block U, for 21 years, at £3 per annum.
On the motion of Mr Coutts, seconded by Mr Milroy, the application for transfer from J. Whelan to D. M. Warren was agreed to, on condition that all arrears were paid—expenses to be borne by applicants. On the motion' of Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Williams, it was agreed that all correspondence referring to transfer of section from F. McCarthy to R. Erskine should be read. A motion by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Air Taplin, was agreed to, “ That the clerk inform Mr Erskine that unless he signs the deed of lease for Block 43 within fourteen days, ihe Board will re-occupy the same.” Proposed by Air Sherwood, seconded by Taplin, and carried, “ That the Board regret their inability to acceed to Air Alercer’s application.” The following words were added,, on the motion of Air Milroy, seconded by Air Coutts, “ As the Board have no land to lease for paddocks for 21 years.” Messrs Coutts and Aitchison, the committee appointed to inspect sections leased by Thomas Wright, reported thorn lobe quite unsuitable for building purposes, and recommended that the lessee be relieved on paying £l3 Is, arrears of rates and rent ; and also that the sections he offered for lease as paddock for 10 years.—On the motion of Air Taplin, seconded by Mr Williams, it was agreed that Mr Wright be relieved of the sections on conditions recommended by committee. On the motion of Air Milroy, seconded by Air AVilliams, it was resolved, “That the time allowed to Air Wright to complete the transfer of sections 1 to G, be limited to two months’”
A motion by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Contis, That the working- committee confer with the Engineer as to system of drainage was lost. Tenders were received for forming- and gravelling footpath on Taranaki Road— John Johnston, £2 9s lid per chain, (accepted) ; John Paterson, £2 17s (id, (declined). Proposed by Mr Alilroy, and seconded by Mr Williams, “ That tiie balance of all deposits in excess of £2 10s paid by lessees to the Board to cover costs of deeds be returned.” An amendment was moved by Mr Aitchison, and seconded by Air Adams, “That lessees who engaged their own solicitor, within the specified lime, have the balance of deposit, if any, after paying their solicitors fee and registration fees, immediately returned.” A further amendment was moved by Mr Coutts, seconded by Mr TapJin, and carried, “That all lessees who have employed their own solicitor and paid registration of lease, be paid balance of deposit money.” A long and warm discussion took place on the above question before a settlement could be eifected.
It was resolved, That the chairman be empowered to take steps to put the Board in possession of further reserves. Resolved, That a special meeting be held on Monday, the 11th February, at 7 p.m., to elect two members for the Patea Harbor Board.
Aloved by Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Milroy,- and carried, “ That the chairman be appointed to wait on the Premier and Native AXinister on their arrival in Carlyle, and represent this Board should any cause arise to require his attendance.” Statement of receipts and expenditure for past month was presented, showing Receipts —balance from 31st December, £SO 19s 4d; received to 31st January. £77 2s lid. Total, £l2B 2s 3d. Expenditure—for work performed, £43 18s- lOd; balance in- Bank,- £B4 3s fid. Total, £l2B 2s 3d. Accounts were passed for payment. Notice of motion was given by Mr Sherwood that resolution No. 7 of October Ist, 1877, that sections passed at sale be open for selection at upset prices, be rescinded. Notice of motion was given by Air Taplin for the Board to borrow £5,000 to be spent in general town improvements, including the formation, metalling, channelling of the chief thoroughfares, the laying of a main drain, tree planting, &c. Also, that a committee of four consisting of Messrs Sherwood, Aiilroy, Aitchison, and the mover be appointed to draw up report in reference to obtaining and expending the amount to be borrowed, with power to consult competent engineers and money lenders. The meeting adjourned.
WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD. The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday, 2nd February. Present —Messrs Bridge (chairman), McLean, and Fleming. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Treasurer’s balance, £322 iGslld.
Correspondence— Letter from H. McLean re rate on section 280 —Resolved, “That he be referred to his valuation notice. From A. Milne —Resolved, “That the Engineer to the Board lay off the side cutting as requested.” From T. Kells—Resolved, “ That the chairman make the necessary inquiries at the Survey Office, and report to tiie Board at nest meeting. From tiie Colonial Secretary—The chairman informed the Board that he had sent an amended notice as requested. Resolved, “That the chairman employ a man after 13th instant, to impound cattle on the following roads: —Kohi, Palmer and Johnston’s, Lower Alangitahgi, Middle Maugitangi, Cemetery to stream from Oturi Lake, Newirg’s and Peats’. W. Lind applied to have the road made passable at the creek from Lake Herengawe—Resolved, “ That AlrLuptou report upon the above at next meeting.” Accounts passed and paid—Hunt, £o ; Herald , £2 2s; Nichcrlls, £4 Us ; Duncan and York, £l7 lOs 3d ; Unite, £4l 8s j VVaverley Town Board, £3B 2s Bd. The meeting adjourned.
