CRICKET MATCH.
PATEA COUNTY V. TARANAKI COUNTY. (from opr own correspondent.) A match between the above Counties was played at Waibi on Monday last, as a return for tbe district match played at Taranaki last year, when the Patea’s came oft victorious. The weather was very unfavorable, cold, with a nasty drizzling rain, though a slight improvement, took place in the afternoon. The ground was in better condition than on any previous match, and the mowing machine had been doing good in clearing off the long grass, thus making the chance of lost balls less. Taranaki won the toss, and sent in their opponents first, who elected Ilargood and Beresford to open the ball for them. The former, however, soon retired for 0, beingcaught by Smith. Beresford ran up S by careful play, when he succumbed to a trimmer from Cleary, who, with Adams, was doing- good service lor their team. Gontts scored 3, when he was unfortunately run out. G. Bayly succeeded in getting G, when Cleary found out his stumps, and ho had to retire. Helps and Fraser were both disposed of for 1 each, and the prospects of the Patca’s making a good score
seemed very small, when Jacomb went to the wickets, and he soon caused a change to come over the spirit of the scene—his first hit being for 5, and together with Eiddiford, who was playing a good steady innings, he quickly ran r<p the score, and had succeeded in making 24, the highest score of the day, when he was bowled by Adams, and was loudly cheered on his return to the tent. Thurston, F. Bayly, and Taplin were the last three to go in, and made 5,3, and 7 each respectively, by good steady play, the innings closing for a total of 79.
After lunch the Taranaki’s took the wickets,-sending in Harrison and North wood to the bowling of F. Bayly and Fraser, who, however, were unable to separate them until upwards of 30 bad been scored, when Harrison was cleverly caught by G. Bayly, and retired with a score of 19, the second highest of the day. Northvvood shortly after put one into the hands of Beresford, but not until he had added 18 more to the score. The match was now looked Upon as a certainty for the Taranaki men, as close on 50 runs bad been obtained with the loss of only four wickets, and odds were freely offered on them. The Patea’s, however, pulled themselves together, and Beresford taking the bowling from Fraser’s end, the luck again turned. Smith was cleverly stumped by Beresford, after scoring 2, and Potts also put one into the same gentleman’s hands, who also bnvlcd Cmminghan for 1. Benley, Take, and Gudgeon, also retired with a score of 2, 1, and l, the last two left to do battle
being Cleary and Davies, the latter of whom was playing - a good innings, and the excitement now became intense, as 70 was shown on the telegraph. A change in the bowling and in the held was made, when the score stood at 74, and at the hrst ball Davies put one into Doubts’ hands, who eagerly accepted the chance, thus giving Fatea a lead of five runs, and as the time was too short for any hope of the match being played out, their victory was looked upon ns rt certainty. The TWanaki’s, however, took the held at once, but threw up the sponge after their opponents had scored 47 with the loss of 5 wickets, thus giving the victory to Fatea in the hrst innings by
O runs. The match passed off without a single hitch or dispute of any kind, the greatest good feeling and humor prevailing'throughout. The holding of the Taranaki team was greatly admired, as was also the bowling of Cleary and Adams, the former of whom was kept on without being once relieved. The fielding of the Fatea team was very good, but inferior to the Taranaki’s, they however made up for the deficiency in their batting, which seems to bo their strong point. The teams, on the conelusion of the match, were hcai'tf/j' cheered by each other, and in the evening the Fatea’s entertained their visitors at a dinner held at Prosser’s Hotel, ITawcra.FATEA COUNTY.
