It was estimated that the stock on the 2nd instant was 1,170,000 qrs—Adelaide, 665; New Zealand, 50s. Leather market quiet; best sides, 10^d.

CARLYLE TOWN BOARD. A meeting of the above Board was held at the Board’s office, Cailyle, on Monday evening last. Present —Messrs GK F. Slierwood (in the chair), Adams, Aitchison, Contts, Milroy, and Williams. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence —Letter from A D. Ilammcrton, New Plymouth, relative to

grants and leases; from W. B, Rhodes, Wellington, enclosing cheque for rates ; from G. D. Hamnievton, returning deed of lease of T. Scown for correction,; from W. Dale, notifying that ho had paid into R. M - Court amount of rates and Court costs ; from J. Graham, objecting to Mr Carey fencing off Kent-strect; from J. Ross, requesting permission to open Surrey and Middlesex streets ; from F. O’S. McCarthy, relative to sub-letting portions of leaseholds; from Sergeant Whelan, requesting to be relie» ed from sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, G, B'ock 5 ; from W. Williams, requesting to have sections G and 14, Block 40, transferred from Mr McCarthy-to himself. Proposed by Mr Adams, seconded by Mr Williams, and carried, “That the Board request Mr F. McCarthy to open Surreystreet.” Pioposcd by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr Contts, and carried, “ That Mr Ross’s second application be hold over until next meeting.” Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Aitchison, and carried, “That Messrs Coutts and Aitchison be a committee to inspect the land occupied by Mr Wright, and report on tlie same at the next meeting of the Board.” Proposed by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Aitchison, and carried, “That Mr Carey’s application be complied with.” The following words were added as an amendment, “ so far as the Board is interested.” Proposed by Mr Coutts, seconded by Mr Williams, and carried, “ That the Board grant permission to Mr McCarthy to sublet a portion of section 2, Block 40, to D. M. Warren.” Letter read from A. C. Croft, and R. G Tennent on behalf of trustees of Cricket Club, as to proposed addition to lease of Cricket reserve, to the effect that the trustees “ were to allow athletic and other sports and cricket matches to be held on the said ground, free of charge to the committee or managers of the same,” and objecting that as the Town Board had been put to no expense whatever in respect of the ground, and that they wore represented on the Board of Trustees by two gentlemen approved by themselves, there should be no such condition as that referred to, and that such matters should be left to the Opinions of the trustees, who otherwise would be put in a position of responsibility without the slightest power. The letter concluded “it is not likely that we [the trustees] should retain office under such circumstances.” Proposed by Mr Sherwood, seconded by Mr Coutts, and carried, “That the consideration of the trustees’ of the Cricket Ground letter, bo Held over until next meeting.” 'The Chairman reported that while in tVeUJng-toJi ho had taken action in regard to the Cemetery reserves, and that he had succeeded in getting the Board appointed trustees under the Cemeteries Act, passed last session. He was informed that the gazette notice to that effect would appear on the 11th instant. Government had also promised to grant ;£-35 to Go spent in repairs. [Correspondence on this subject will be found in another column]. Proposed by Mr J Milroy, seconded by Mr Adams, and carried, “ That the thanks of the Board be accorded to Mr Sherwood, for the interest lie took while in Wellington re the Cemetery reserve.” On the motion of Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Williams, it was resolved that the footpath be formed and gravelled from Major Turner’s gate to the Catholic Church, on ilio oast side, and from the Post office to Unihanks Road on the west. Plans to be prepared, and aider approval by the working committee tenders to bo called for.

' On the motion of Mr AUchison, seconded by Mr Milroy, the secretary was ordered to write enquiring the price of glazed drain tiles, with a view to ascertaining the cost of making necessary drains. On letter from Mr Dale being read stating that ho had paid into Court the amount of rates and costs of Court, in case ho had expressed his intention of defending on account of alleged illegality of Board’s action in striking the rate, the Chairman expressed himself in strong terms. The Board had been put to the expense of defending the case, and to suit the convenience of Mr Dale, after a solicitor had been called to attend from Wanganui, and other expenses incurred, the ease was adjourned, and was now abandoned. It was a base action on the part of any man to put the Board to unnecessary expense when money was so much needed for town improvements. In this case he looked upon it as defrauding the ratepayers of their money. On the motion of Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Coutts, Mr D. M. Harris was appointed vainer to the Board —to be paid £5. List to bo ready by the 15th instant. On the motion of Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Coutts, it was resolved, “ That the Clerk immediately summon to the R. M. Court, Carlyle, all ratepayers in arrears.” Statement of receipts and expenditure fertile month of December showed —Receipts : balance from November, £62 17s Bd, received during the month, £3 3s 6d—total £6O Is 2d. Expenditure for December was £l3 12s Id, leaving a balance of £52 9s Id.
