(To the Editor of the Patka Mail-.)
Sir, —Your report of the late incefing at Normanby is calculated to mislead your readers, and possibly injure the fair name of the “ Katemarao Small Farm Association.”
The dispute, re the secretary holding the entrance fees entrusted to him, until the general meeting decided what should be done with the same, took place before his re-election, and not after, as your informant would evidently lead us to believe. This proved that the shareholders were perfectly satisiied with his conduct, by returning him to office over a gentleman equally qualified for the position. Ho was moreover elected by a majority of more than two to one. "The next item “ That a report had been received from the Waste Lands Board to the effect that there was only about 6,000 acres of good land in the block,” was also incorrect, the telegram as received, and read at the meeting, stated the area of suitable laud estimated at 4,000 acres. No mention of 6,000 acres in that report. The paragraph stating that “A committee meeting was afterwards held” is also incorrect, no committee meeting was held after the general meeting. The last item “ That the chairman was instructed to telegraph about another block of land in what is known as the Valley of the Patea Liver” is also wide from the facts, as the following copy of the resolution passed will show. Proposed by Mr G. E. Gibson, and seconded by Mr George McLean, and carried, “That Mr King, chairman of the committee, be empowered by the meeting to communicate with the Waste Lands Board to-morrow, and apply
fer the balance of the 20,000 acres hr suitable position and adjoining, if pos~ the portion now accepted.”—l am, &c. MAX. D. KINO. Haworth 3rd Decx, 1577. [Note. —We regret that inaccuracy ■ though slight and of but comparatively little moment, should have civil what was stated in last issue, in ;er r 1 to the Ketoniarae (Small Farm Association. It was not looked upon as a report, for the simple icason that we hid no reporter present. It was just an irregular outline of the chief mailers brought forward at the meeting, and in connection with the meeting. Under the circumstances it would have been no great strain on the chairman to have forwarded a copy of the minutes, as i-; n -n 2 in the case of meetings held in mn c. urn; places. No mention ie,vl. .i. y.uuc acres in that report,” but tm a.; mm:lion made at the meeting el 1,;. acres, so really the chairman need not have shown himself so peppery. An-,1 about the telegram for more. laud, the chairman can scarcely say that the Valley of the Tatea River was not freely talked about, In Mr King's letter there is too much of attempt to make a mountain out of a Mole Hill. It is to bo regretted that unpleasantness arose at the meeting, but as was remarked in last issue, a few resignations need not effect the progress of the Association. As another correspondent explains the position as regards lire secretary, we deem further unnecessary.—Eo. Mail.3
