HEAVY ON THE MAJOR.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Ml Editor, —Mr Sheehan’s answer to 1 Major Atkinson’s No-confidence dodge, was a reply, I think, to be appreciated—to die doing. In a speech the gallant Major made in New Plymouth, he prophesied that the time would come when he should be sent about In’s business. That time so far has come. Now, Mr Editor, I have heard Major Atkinson extolled up to the skies by a few individuals for reasons perhaps best known to themselves. I can tell you a few things he lias done—given us a new E.M., and a Clerk (such' a writer—hardly anybody can read it), for which, as we did not euppliantly ask, we must be thankful; and a Harbor Board which represents actually nothing—neither wealth, intelligence or good manners ; and the Mountain Koad, which has been allowed to lapse as far as Patea County goes. Even the Harbor Bill was nearly lost. In'the way of patriotism he is a Wuha Maori man, and supported a Land Bill that would have allowed capitalists to swallow up the whole island; and now that he is in the cold, see how the weather affects him. I trust that the gallant Major will be allowed by the good sense of the House to retire —at any rate for a season—as, I am sure,, after such a longcourse of trying to keep in, ho has at last got out, and must require a rest. It may give him an of working up for his- constituents, as it is evident he has forgotten them these last two years. If he will do this lie will verylikely stand a chance of being elected again for this district. —I am, &c. MINUS A BILL.ET. [Note, —This letter was in type for last issue—Ed.} o
