A telegram received from Singapore, dated October 24th, states that the steamer Duke of Edinburgh was to leave that night to repair the Penang cable. It was considered possible that through communication would be restored the following night, or in about 24 hours.
The sickness on board Zealandia, which vessel arrived in Wellington on the 26th, and was quarantined, is small pox. One of the crew was attacked with it shortly after leaving Bio, and is still ill. He was soon followed by another of the crow who died in a few days. A third and fourth were attacked and are yet suffering from the effects of the disease. There are several other cases of sickness aboard, but not of a dangerous character. As the Zealandia was not an immigrant ship there was no doctor on board, and, in consequence of the nature of the disease, some difficulty was experienced in getting one to go into quarantine, but it is understood that the agents —Levin & Co., will send a medical man on board as soon: as one is obtainable. CHRISTCHURCH. October 26. The Famine Relief Fund Committee authorised the Ma}'or-to send a further sum of £2,000 to. Madras., The total amount collected is about ,£3,000, jAt a, public meeting resolutions were carried to the effect that the Public Health Act Amendment Bill should not be proceeded with till the ratepayers liad lime to consider it;

The reply of J. W. Thomson, President of the Otago Convention, to Earl Carnarvon’s despatch of 28th June, is published in Daily Times this morning. He states it is his intention to lay an extract before the Executive Committee of the Convention. The reply, which :is long, is of an argumentative kind, and defends the course pursued by the Convention.
