SYDNEY. October 25. A vessel which arrived at Cooktown from Paupua, reports a great gold discovery on the North-west coast. She has specimens on hoard. Messrs Macintosh, Davies, Greenwood, and Stuart have been returned for East Sydney. Mr Parkes was rejected. Five thousand pounds have been collected for the Indian Famine Fund. LONDON. October 18. A violent gale swept the United King-, dom, inflicting enormous damage and loss of life. Tno Senatorial Left, in a Press communication, give the result of the French election as follows ; —Out of 533 deputies, 335 are Republicans, and 198 Government nominees.. The latter consist of — partists, 40 ; Legitimists, 68 ; .Conservatives, 90. Many of the official candidates are expected to be unseated by Election Committees, which will probably raise the Republican-majority to 140. Prefects have been summoned to Paris to receive instructions respecting the second balloting. There is no indication that Ministers intend to resign.
