MANUTAHI.
[from a correspondent.] October 10. The entertainment given by members of the Debating Society passed off very successfully last night, although, owing to unavoidable absence of several members, the burden fell on a few. There was a good attendance, include ing a number of ladies. Songs were contributed by Messrs Lee and Dawson, but the gem of the evening was a song by Mrs J. Christie, “ Many a time I am sad at Heart.” Messrs D. Ginger and Lee gave readings from “ Ingoldsby Legends,” which were duly appreciated. Mr Guthrie recitated and received due meed of applause. The Sword Dance by Mr Dawson was encored. Of the songs “ Queen of my Soul,” by Mr Lee, and Awfully Clever,” by Mr Dawson, were well received, A sham lecture on “ Phrenology,” by Professor Dasoni, caused considerable amusement. A fairly enjoyable evening was brought to a close, about ten o’clock, and the audience dispersed apparently satisfied with the evening’s amusement.
