De world wa£ so fall 'bb ‘ tipplyilycation,’ becarise dc teachers demselves did not know which dey ought to teach de dat drink was a good creature ob God, and strengthened de body ! Why, if dat which went into dere mouths were as worthless as dat which came out, dey would berry soon die of starvation (much laugh,ter)..- Why were dere so many untutored children running 'about the streets? Because de drink "was always running . down dere parents’ throats. How could Joy satisfy, the children’s thirst for knowledge, whon.de publicans were allowed to gratify do parents’ thirst for drink ? If de parents wor always at de public-house getting a drain, what could dey expect but dat do children would always be in de gutter ? Besides, what was do use ob teaching Massa Johnny Bull de use ob de globes, if at the same time dey taught him de use ob de glass ? What was de use oh teaching him to decline a pronoun, unless ho were taught also to decline dc glass ob wine? Dey taught de hoys how far dc moon was from de earth, but would dat teach him to keep away from de ‘ Basing Man,’ or dc ‘ Seven Stars’— (laughter). Dey led the boys back into ‘do past, and told dem what King John signed, but did not toll dem What dey domselvcs ought ,to sign if dey would win in dc battle of life —(applause).' ’ The sneaker was frequently applauded, and the amusing witticisms witii which the oration abounded, evoked much merriment.
